About Me

I’m the woman you see at the grocery store: no make-up, hair in a haphazard pony tail, worn jeans and a stained t-shirt. What you don’t see is that I’m complicated and interesting on the inside–just like you! I’m the mother of four incredible children, the wife of Rene, and a friend to many. I’ve been a piano teacher for over thirty years, and when I’m not being paid to nag other people’s children to practice, I’m either tending to my flower garden, or somewhere with my nose in a book. After writing in my head for most of my adult life, I finally finished a novel. LOST IN OAXACA was published by She Writes Press in April, 2020.

Dear Jessica, I knew Terri Toon from CHLA. In 1976, I was treated for Ewing Sarcoma, bone cancer and at the time was 16 years old. Terri was there when I was being treated, and I drew to her like a magnet, looked up to her as she gave me all kinds of advice. I talked to here 2 days before she died, and her death inspired me not to give up as she never did. I was thinking of her today and googled her name and found you, amazing. Thank you for writing this,

      Aurora,
It meant so much to me to hear from you and know that you survived your cancer and are here so many years later to inspire others. It’s incredible that it’s been forty years! Cancer is so awful in so many ways, but it is also amazing in the sense that it connects and inspires people so deeply. I never knew Terri other than seeing her in the hallways at school, but I remember her being so bright and full of life. She just had a kind of magnetic presence about her. Thank you for taking the time to write your note to me–I really appreciate it.
      Best,
      Jessica Winters Mireles

Dear Jessica, thank you for your response. Did your daughter survive her cancer? All my best, please keep in touch. Aurora

Yes, she did survive! She’s now nine and cancer free. We have been so blessed.
